Governor David Nweze Umahi of Ebonyi State has on Friday charged corps members deployed to the state to place the promotion of National Unity and integration as their top priority in the course of their service.
Umahi gave the charge during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2023 Batch A stream 2 Corps Members which was held at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) permanent site, Old Macgregor College in Afikpo North Local Government Area of the State.
Eye witness reports gathered that a total of 1,029 corps members made of 532 males and 497 females were inducted into the camp for the 3 weeks orientation course, having graduated from their various high institutions.
“Gentlemen Corps Members, National Unity, and integration should be the top priority of every Nigerian.
“We must co-exist to achieve this common goal irrespective of our cultural backgrounds. what we need is cooperation and teamwork to forge ahead.
“Every element of nepotism, tribalism, and ethnicity must be removed from among us as a nation to progress“. Umahi said.
The Governor who was represented by the commissioner for Youth and sports development, Mr. Charles Akpuinika commended the NYSC for strengthening the unity, peace, and progress of the nation since its creation while assuring his continual support for the scheme.
The State Coordinator, Mrs. Bamai Mercy while addressing the Corps Members said the essence of the orientation course is to instill discipline to guide them throughout the service year and beyond, urging them to always abide by camp rules and regulations.
“Let me re-cho that no act of indiscipline of any sort will be tolerated in this camp, so please be properly guided and read the NYSC handbooks issued to you for better understanding of every aspect of the service year”.
She encouraged them to identify with the need of their host communities and solve them to be entitled to State or National recognition for positive impacts.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NYSC governing board, Mr Charles Akpuinika who was represented by, Mr Lawrence Orji has called on the new Corps Members to actively participate in camp activities and adhere to rules and regulations.
