The New Registrar of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN), Dr Obinna Awiaka has promised fight quackery to boost the image of the practice.
Awiaka made the pledge after meeting with management and staff of the board as after assuming office as the new registrar and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the board.
The new helmsman said he will improve the regulation of training and practice of optometry and dispensing opticianry in the country.
“The profession’s training curriculum and scheme of service would conform with international best practices with quackery and other unwholesome practices checked.
“We would carry professional optometrists and dispensing opticians along to work together and define our different unique roles and boundaries.
The new registrar promised the staff of ODORBN thatt he would of make their welfare a top priority.
“I will also ensure that students in our training institutions who have been at home since graduating are inducted soonest into the profession”.
Prof. Ebele Uzodike, the Immediate Past Registrar congratulated Awiaka for his assumption of office and prayed for his successful tenure.
She highlighted her strides in office and urged the successor to build on her legacies.
The new ODORBN Registrar was taken on a familiarisation tour of facilities of the board including its administrative head office complex still under construction.
The Assistant Registrar of ODORBN, Dr Okafor Igbo, the Secretary General of Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA) and Dr Victor Aliche, Immediate Past President of Association of Nigerian Dispensing Opticians (ANDO) were also present.
Optometrist David Mallim, the Immediate past President of Women Optometrists in Nigeria (WON) Dr. Adesuwa Ogli, The Chairman, Excos and Members of Nigerian Optometric Association Abuja Chapter, Dr. Simeon Eghujovbo, Representatives from the Federal Ministry of Health were present.
Dr Steve Ogba and Mr. Bassey, President of Guild of Optometric Directors of Nigeria, Dr. Adesuwa Agbontaen, Immediate Past member of the ODORBN Governing Board, Dr. Damian Echendu amongst other top management and staff of the board were present.
