Mayor Super Cup: Like Argentina, Future Stars FC wins coveted trophy


The sublime and exhilarating Mayor Football Super Cup 2022 has come to a climax and Future Stars FC like the Albaceleste of Argentina, won the cup after beating much-touted All Stars FC 5-4 on penalties.

Future stars victory came on the heels of Argentina’s third world cup triumph in Qatar as it had to endure a goaless regulation time result to clinch the maiden edition of the Mayor Super cup in a straight penalty shoot out.

The victory brought to an end, one month of intense football action of a competition sponsored by by an astute politician and staunch football enthusiast, Hon. Maxwell Umahi.

Hon. Maxwell Umahi is the All Progressives Congress (APC) Candidate for Abakaliki North state constituency in the Ebonyi state House of Assembly.

The third place match between Bankers FC and competition favourites, Police FC preceded the final and fans got full dosage of entertainment as Bankers pipped Police FC 1-0.

Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha, the APC chairman in the state who was the special guest at the final, commended the donor and the organisers for ensuring a hitch free competition.

“The sponsor ably supported by the commissioner for youths and sports might not know the impact of what they have done as the health of several people have been enhanced by watching matches at the competition.

“I was feeling pains at my back but immediately I arrived the stadium for this final, I became whole”.

He announced a cash donation of N100,000 to the winners, N50, 000 to the runners up and N25,000 to the third-placed team.

“I encourage the winners not to behave like France, but strive to retain the competition in its next edition because we believe in winining back to back”.

the Sponsor of the competition thanked all those who strived to make the competition a huge success.

“I dedicate this competition to my mentor and our leader, the indefatigable Governor of Ebonyi state, Chief Engr David Umahi for revolutionalising sports as he has done in all sectors of the state.

“My intention is to use sports especially football to unite the people especially youths and the success of this competition has given me confidence to do more in the sector”.

Hon. Charlse Akpu-Enika, the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports thanked the sponsor for the competition, noting that the investment in it has paid off.

“We are assuring Hon. Maxwell of our unflinching support as he is the choice of the people for the assembly seat and nothing will stop the realisation of this goal,”.
