The Wife of Ebonyi Governor, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has urged residents of the state to enroll in mass literacy schools within their localities to improve themselves academically.
Nwifuru made the call on Wednesday in Abakaliki while kick-starting the 2023 mass literacy campaign in tbe state.
She said the Gov. Francis Nwifuru-led government was committed to promoting mass literacy and adult education.
”The government has done well to rejuvenate the mass literacy programme.
”The plan is to awaken the consciousness of our people to understand that knowledge drives the world,” she said.
The governor’s wife stated that the essence of the campaign was to sensitise the people on the need to embrace education.
Nwifuru said that the mass literacy programme would target people of all ages residing in communities with low access to education.
She urged local government authorities in the state to key into the initiative in the interest of the people.
”We urge you to join the campaign, organise more centres and provide learning aids, this is a serious matter.
”Let’s work together to eradicate illiteracy, let’s empower communities and build a society where the people are informed.
Also speaking, Mrs Stella Nwagu, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Adult Education and Mass Literacy, described the campaign as ‘timely and necessary’.
Nwagu said that the current administration in the state gave priority attention to quality education and manpower development.
”Payment to adult education facilitators has been regular and learning materials are provided for the centres.
‘We are only urging our people to take advantage of the programme to upgrade themselves,” she said.
